Description: Trumpeter Models USS California BB-44 This is a new Trumpeter Models kit #5783. This is a 1:700 scale model requiring assembly and painting. Plastic cement and paints not included. USS California (BB-44) was the second ship of the Tennessee-class battleships. California was built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1916, launched in 1919, and commissioned in 1921. The California then focused on training and participated in many fleet problem-solving exercises. In 1941, the Japanese navy launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The USS California was severely damaged by Japanese aircraft and sank in the harbor a few days later. The California was refloated in 1942 and then returned to the United States for repairs and modernization. After reconstruction, the California participated in the Mariana Islands and Palau wars and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She was hit by a kamikaze suicide plane during the Battle of Lingayin Bay and had to return home for repairs. In 1945, California briefly participated in the Battle of Okinawa, and then transferred to the East China Sea to assist in mine clearance operations. After the war, the California participated in the Allied occupation of Japan, and then returned to China to standby. California was decommissioned in 1947 and deregistered in 1959 for sale and scrapping.
