Description: Utopian Television : Rossellini, Watkins, and Godard Beyond Cinema, Paperback by Cramer, Michael, ISBN 1517900395, ISBN-13 9781517900397, Brand New, Free shipping in the US This study explores how three film directors used TV as a medium to promote social progress and new forms of art during the post-WWII period in Europe. The author shows that these three directors applied the ideas of Ernst Bloch and philosopher Fredric Jameson’s “utopia as method,” even though the three directors did not know of Bloch’s and Jameson’s work. Th begins with an overview of Bloch’s and Jameson’s ideas and a discussion of television allowed for new ways of conceiving the relationship between aesthetic and informational practices. The next three chapters are devoted to each director. The book considers Roberto Rossellini’s historical encyclopedia, which consisted of 40 hours of programming created for TV between 1962 and 1977, then analyzes two films made by Peter Watkins for BBC television: Culloden and The War Game; Watkins’ 1971 film Punishment Park is also examined. Th then examines numerous works of Jean-Luc Godard and his collaborators from 1969 to 1977, tracing recurring aesthetic, semiotic, and political themes. The closing chapter discusses later works by Watkins and Godard, as well as television productions of Alexander Kluge, and examines the relationship between cinema, television, and utopian thinking after the opening of the European airwaves to private interests in the 1980s. Th contains b&w film stills, photos, and screen shots. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR ()
