Looks never worn dead stock Here’s a late 1940s early 1950s 2pc. black and white and brown checkered suit made from rayon material that, as the label indicates, was referred to as Versatweed. In researching this fabric I found two references in newspaper ads that give a little bit of information about the fabric. In the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania an ad from September 16, 1949 offers a 2pc. suit dress made from “Burlington’s Versatweed Rayon”. And, another ad published in the Kansas City Times, Kansas City, Missouri, on September 1, 1949 states that Versatweed is “wonderful rayon” and shows several suits made from the material. There is very little else that I could find on the material and even less on the Jane Andrea label. I would feel most confident in coming to several conclusions about this illusive fabric….it does seem to have been quite durable and has held up very well over time and it’s lightweight and drapes attractively. This nice suit has a jacket that’s fitted with seams front and back even though it still retains a slight boxy shape and I believe that’s mostly because of the placement of the square faux pockets at the bottom on each side of the jacket. Although the round plastic button detail on each button flap can be buttoned and unbuttoned, there is no actual pocket to be found. There is a pointed flat collar neckline and small shoulder pads in each shoulder area of the jacket. The sleeves are long with no cuff and the jacket closes with eight round black plastic buttons. The buttonholes are nicely finished keyhole style. Most of the inner seams in the jacket are finished with the clean finish edge method. The sleeve hem is finished with hem tape as well as the hem at the bottom of the jacket. As for the skirt, it has straight lines and two seams on each side of the back of the skirt that run from the bottom of the waistband to the hemline. There is only one seam on the front and that’s in the very middle of the skirt. The skirt closes at the side with a metal zipper and the waistband has a button .The inner seams in the skirt are pinked and the bottom hemline is finished with hem tape.
