Description: This Automatic Electric/ GTE Styeline is model 980 in AE-19 Gardenia White--a very bright white. This color is prone to discoloration in unrestored condition. It was AE's answer to the Western Electric Trimline phone. AE gave theirs more angular styling and a heftier handset. This phone dates from 1976 and was refurbished at some point with the base beige ABS plastic being factory painted to bright white and the connections converted to standard, modern modular RJ11 and RJ22 ones. I polished the bright white base and sanded and polished the handset parts to restore their bright white color. This fully functional phone features a single bell mechanical ringer set to ring softly without volume control. These ringers are particularly fussy and I spent quite a bit of time adjusting this one to ring as well as possible. The base has a lock for its standard modular station cord which I will leave open for you to close if you desire after inserting the station cord. The pushbutton dial features small round buttons and a 'hang-up" oval button on the handset. The dial has internal polarity control so it should dial out even if your house wiring is reversed. There was never a light function offered with this phone. In keeping with the "70's vibe" of this phone, I replaced the dark gray dial face with a custom made muted orange one which was not available when this phone was made, a new "area code" designation strip, and a NOS clear plastic cover over it. I added a NOS modular 9 foot handset cord and will include a white standard modular station cord as shown FULLY FUNCTIONAL with disclaimer: This phone will work (ring, answer, and call) on a standard landline that supports pulse dialing. I have tested it on my residential Spectrum Cable line that supports multiple vintage phones. The best way to make sure it will work at your location is to currently have a rotary phone. If not, it is always a good idea to call your local phone company and check if your "service still supports pulse dialing from an old rotary phone". If your phone service does, great. If it does not, your phone will not be able to place calls without a converter. These are available on ebay and elsewhere for purchase. RESTORATION is meant to restore the phone to how it may have looked in use. There will be no cracks or deep gouges but signs of use and slight color variations may remain as each phone is unique and not presented as mint or new. For example there may be small scratches or nicks around high use areas like the handset cradle where removing them through more sanding might change the contour of the phone. The phone has been chemically cleaned inside and out, removed of rust, dust and grime. Wired to work on a landline, this phone has been tested, then polished through several steps. I have taken multiple pictures of this phone inside and out because I have learned the hard way when buying phones. I always pop them open because seeing is better than wishful thinking.
