Description: Weight : 2.30g Ring size : K Lovely vintage 9ct gold wedding ring, assayed in London circa 1949. The ring is also stamped with the ‘Utility’ hallmark. In 1941, during WW2, the manufacturing of new items of jewellery was prohibited as was deemed as inessential. However, the British Government understood the social importance of wedding rings, and hence pardoned the jewellery ban by creating the ‘Wedding Ring Standard Act’. This placed restrictions on the form of newly manufactured wedding rings, such as they were to weigh no less than 2 pennyweights, they were to be made from only 9 carat gold, to be plain with no facets or such ornaments. They also capped the price to no more than one Guinea, including purchase tax. This was informed to help preserve precious gold reserves during times of dire economy, & to allow greater import of goods. The ‘utility’ hallmark could therefore be seen as a seal of approval for help to the war efforts, or in this case to help rebuild the British economy in the years commencing the end of the war. Please see photos for condition reference, really is in great shape. Feel free to ask any questions.
