Description: Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage a/d/s/ S500 high performance monitor loudspeakers, USA-manufactured by Analog & Digital Systems, Inc. They were only made from 1994-97 and are one of ADS’ less common models. These modest-sized, high quality speakers feature a two-way design with 5¼” mid/bass woofers and 1” dome tweeters housed in attractive metal cabinets that measure 10⅝” tall by 5⅞” wide by 7½” deep (incl. grille protrusion). The enclosures are finished in durable grey enamel and have black metal grilles. With their clean, minimalist look, the S500 speakers blend effortlessly with just about any type of listening room décor. So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these exceptional ADS speakers should be yours. This pair of ADS S500 speakers is in clean, outstanding condition. The cabinets are in terrific shape with no dings or scratches, just a few tiny scuffs, primarily at a rear bottom corner. Plus, the metal grilles are perfect with solid corner mount tabs. Also, the a/d/s/ cabinet emblems are also in great shape. And, the bottoms feature small circular rubber pads at the corners to prevent marring any surfaces that they’re placed upon. In addition, all four drivers are structurally flawless having been well-protected behind the metal grilles. The 1” dome tweeters have perfect radiating surfaces and pristine faceplates, while the woofers have sturdy poly cones, perfect voice coil center caps, and permanent rubber surrounds. Overall, these vintage ADS speakers are exceptionally well-preserved. Most importantly, as you’d expect from ADS, the S500’s sound fantastic with fast, detailed midrange, sparkling 20kHz highs, and bass that is quite remarkable for speakers sized this reasonably. Plus, they feature sturdy +/- binding posts for connections to banana plugs, pin ends, or bare wire up to 14 gauge. The S500 are some very nice sounding bookshelf-sized speakers. For those who haven’t owned ADS, the first impression is generally immediate and significant. I’ve owned several larger ADS models over the years, and am still blown away by how great the sensibly-sized S500’s sound! This low serial number pair of S500 was purchased in the mid 1990’s for over $500. These were the last of the Massachusetts-made speakers, representing the end run of the ADS legacy. Soon afterwards, the company would be sold, move out west, and their products were never quite the same again. So, if you want to fill a room with incredibly detailed, potent sound, but don’t have the space (or desire) for floor-standing cabinets, you’ve found the right listing!
