Vintage Gruen Precision Power-Date 20 ATM Diver w/Screwdown Crown,ETA 2783 Mvmt

Description: This seldom seen vintage 1970's Gruen came from the estate of the original owner. The matte black "Swiss Made" signed dial is in pristine condition were it not for a few loose dust particles sitting on its surface and the original lume, which remains fully intact and emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a subtle pistachio hue. The faded black bezel, which shows wear and rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension, presents nicely. The heavy duty all stainless steel case shows honest wear with minor signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped "WATERPROOF ANTIMAGNETIC INCABLOC AUTOMATIC ALL STAINLESS STEEL SWISS MADE" with "20 ATMOS" followed by "TESTED" and "1071" stamped in the center. The original crystal shows scratching which in my humble opinion doesn't look nearly as pronounced in person. The 25 jewels Swiss ETA 2783 automatic movement with quickset date function is clean, keeps accurate time and the date wheel rolls over at 12 am. The quickset date function works flawlessly by pulling the crown out to the first position and then turning it clockwise until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the watch had a solid power reserve of approximately 43 hours. The crown, which unscrews and screws back down perfectly as it should, winds smoothly. Given that this watch is more than 50 years old and considering it has likely been several decades since the movement was last serviced (there are several watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back with the latest appearing to be from 1984) a complete overhaul is long overdue and recommended. This watch measures approximately 37 mm excluding the crown, approximately 41 mm including the crown and approximately 18 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. Given the vintage nature of this watch and considering it has likely been several decades since the movement was last serviced a complete overhaul is recommended. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time.
