Description: Vintage Hand Carved Ebony Wood Elephant - Dimensions are : 7" high , 8 1/4" long , 4" wide - Material is Ebony wood. This Ebony elephant is hand carved and heavy. The pachyderm seems to be the African species but could be the Asian elephant. The ear size is somewhere between the two. Some of these types of carvings were created on the African continent and some in Sri Lanka and most are significantly smaller than ours here. There is some minor and truly insignificant 'splitting' on the piece but this is to be expected with a large piece of ebony as it is a very dry wood and can be affected over the long term by conditions of moisture and heat. The tusks are virtually always missing on these elephants and we don't believe that these are the originals as they almost certainly are not ivory. Ebony is one of the hardest species of wood and exceedingly difficult to carve and shape so this large version must have taken a considerable amount of time and ability. Large chunk pieces of Ebony this size are now essentially impossible to find and are quite pricey when available. This piece is very well made and almost double the size of any other currently offered ebony elephant. We have priced it very affordably for such a stellar example.
