Description: Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia with a population of 180,820. It is the largest settlement in North Queensland and unofficially considered its capital hosting a significant number of governmental, community and major business administrative offices for the northern half of the state. The city is also a major industrial center. The first settlement was a camp that was established below the rocky spur of Melton Hill in 1864. Townsville’s population was 4,000 people by1882 and grew to 13,000 by 1891. In 1902 Townsville was proclaimed a city under the “Local Authorities Act”. Castle Hill is a heritage-listed isolated pink granite monolith in the center of the city of Townsville. Its indigenous name is “Cotharinga”. It rises to a height of some 938 feet above sea level and dominates the city skyline. It is one of the most distinctive natural features on the Queensland coast. There are a number of vantage points from which to view the city below and also across Cleveland Bay to Magnetic Island. This is a card, published by “Willmett & Sons,” that captures a great view of Townsville, from Castle Hill" that includes Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island in the distance. It is in very good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image and reverse. Willmett & Sons was a printing house in Townsville est. 1882, that published view-cards depicting local scenes in tinted halftone that gave the illusion of being hand colored. Some of these cards have a very high gloss finish. The card c 1915 is in excellent condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The reverse is also clean.
