This has resulted in a commentary on British defence policy from the end of the Colonial era in South Arabia, through the years of the Cold War, during various phases of the Northern Ireland emergency – at the outset of which the 1st Battalion was the first to be used on the streets of Ulster – to the Gulf War and finally to Bosnia-Herzegovina, where the same battalion served as part of the UN Protection Force in 1993-----------------------The restoration of the regiment's Territorial Army battalion in 1993 was greeted with delight. This battalion has ties with Yorkshire dating from 1859 and a sporting legacy second to none in the Territorial Army.As Yorkshiremen, the officers and soldiers of the regiment have an abiding preoccupation with sport. Athletics, distance running, rugby, soccer and swimming have been in constant evidence – even on the gravel and sand pitches of Aden or open spaces overlooked by sentries in Ulster.
