Transmittal folds else near fine in original Hotel Lassen envelope with some soiling and wear. Fantastic photograph of the 1929 Amateur Athletic Union women's basketball champion Sunoco Oilers of Dallas, looking to be seated on a rooftop. Included is a letter from the secretary and treasury of the Texas division of the Southern A.A.U., W.F. Jacoby, to Miss Verna Montgomery, captain of the Oklahoma Presbyterian College team, a participant in the 1930 tournament. Mr. Jacoby, a proud Texan, writes a very entertaining (no pressure whatsoever...) letter:"It happens that the four greatest teams in America are from the Texas Division of the Southern A.A.U.... It also happens that you have a tradition to uphold... that no team save a Texas Division team has ever defeated a Texas Division team in a National Contest.... the eyes of Texas, and Oklahoma, are upon you tonight, and your opponent SHALL NOT PASS."The A.A.U. was an important organization in the development of the women's game, holding the first national tournament in 1926. An opposing organization, the Women's Division of the National Amateur Athletic Federation (WDNAAF) put pressure on the AAU, cancelling the tournament the following two years. In 1929, the tournament was reinstated and the Sunoco Oilers defeated the Golden Cyclones, also a Dallas team, in the championship. These early A.A.U. tournaments also included a beauty pageant as part of the festivities. According to several papers of the time, Miss Verna Montgomery was crowned beauty queen in 1930, with the Sunoco Oilers winning the basketball portion again that year.
